Pipestone Area Schools
Early Childhood Screening

Minnesota State Law mandates that children at the age of 3 1/2 to 4 years old participate in a developmental screening before entering school.  The purpose of the screening is to identify children who may have health and learning problems, but it is not intended to substitute for health care from your family physician, dentist, or other provider.

Preschool screening is done by the Pipestone Area School District. It is held three or four times during the school year. During this screening, children are tested on their coordination, color, and shape knowledge, and naming of body parts. They also go through a hearing and vision test, height and weight, and a health summary. Once the screening is finished the parents will have an exit interview to discuss the results and discuss any family concerns that could affect the child’s education or development. The screening will take one hour to complete.

Dates for the 2025-26 school year have tentatively been set for Wednesday, October 8, Wednesday, December 17, and Wednesday, February 25, 2026.  The screenings will be held at Pipestone Elementary.

If you are new to the district or your child is four years of age and has not been screened or if you have any questions about the screening or to register.  Please email Kristie Weinkauf.
