Welcome! I have experience teaching in several areas within Pipestone’s school district. I have taught in Special Education, Title Reading, and Reading Recovery in first and second grade, along with being a First grade and Kindergarten classroom teacher.  This year, I am lucky to be teaching Reading once again. I will be working with children in Kindergarten, First, and Second grade who need an extra boost to learn and practice phonetic skills and reading strategies to become successful readers. I  want to encourage parents to listen to their children read at home. Repeated reading (rereading their books) is scientifically proven to improve reading. I look forward to helping children love books.

We will have an Awesome year reading!

Who are Title One Students?
They are students who will succeed when given some extra instruction. These students are identified by their classroom teachers as needing additional help in reading and/or math based on their test scores and classroom performance. Students may receive instruction individually or within a small group. Instruction may be given by the Reading Specialist or by the Title 1 Para-professional.

How Are Parents Involved?

*Parents are notified of their child’s eligibility for and participation in Title 1.
*Parents listen to their child read and do individual assignments.
*Parents are encouraged to participate in Title 1 meetings and learning opportunities.
*Parents are invited to be a part of the Title 1 Parent Advisory Council.

What Can Parents Do?

*Share a love of learning and set a good example by reading and writing. ( make lists, write letters,…)
* Listen to your child read their books at home. Rereading is a scientifically proven method to improve reading.
*Make learning fun by playing educational games, visiting the library, and listening to and talking with your child to increase their vocabulary.
*Show an interest in your child’s school day. Look in their school bags and talk about their work. Ask specific questions and praise their efforts and improvements.

Classroom Behavior

We have created a list of 6 rules for behavior and continue to review what they mean.

* Listen when someone is speaking
* Follow directions quickly
*Read  your take-home book nightly
* Always do your best work
* Take good care of your books
*Be a caring friend

The students are rewarded for good behavior through verbal praise, activities, special stickers, helping, hands (“give yourself a hand”), and more. They will earn a sticker on a homework chart for returning their book packets with the work signed by an adult to show that they have done the work. Please be sure that the book packets are returned promptly.

Take Home Packets

Each child is given a Take Home Packet at the beginning of the school year. This packet will come home daily with your child, and be returned daily for those who are in the 1 to 1 Ready to Read program. Parents are to check it daily to make sure the sentence is read and glued into the writing book along with having your child read the books to you daily.

A monthly reward Chart will be filled in daily if the homework is done and returned on time.

The other Title children will be getting Take Home books/short stories on paper one to two times weekly to do at home. After your child has practiced reading these, please sign them and return them to school. If their homework is signed and returned, your child will be able to put a sticker on a special chart for books.

Thank you for all the help you give your child at home. Working together is a great way to help your child succeed.

Minnesota Reading Corp is an AmeriCorps program that provides trained literacy tutors for children aged three to grade three. It is a statewide initiative to help every MN child become a successful reader by the end of third grade.  The program places AmeriCorps members as literacy tutors in sites across Minnesota to implement a research-based early literacy effort to help struggling readers. Since 2003, Minnesota Reading Corps has grown from serving 250 children to above 40,000 at more than 600 sites statewide.  Literacy tutors serve as one-on-one tutors and provide interventions to students who are just below proficiency in reading.  The tutors meet with each student daily for 20 minutes to build phonics, phonemic awareness, and fluency skills.

Shawna Veldhuizen and Arlene Bloemendaal are our Minnesota Reading Corps members serving Grades 1 and 2 in Pipestone this year. Our K-Focus tutor this year is Heather DeWilde. Heather is also serving a few 3rd graders. They were all trained at the end of August to learn the interventions used in the program and will continue to have ongoing training.  Each will work with 15  students daily. Students are exited from the program when they consistently meet Benchmark scores.
