Dear Parents,

This is my seventeenth year with Pipestone Area Schools, and my eighth year teaching second grade. I am extremely excited to be teaching your child! I know second grade is going to be a great year! There are so many fun things to do and learn in second grade, and I can't wait to get started!

You are cordially invited to be a partner in your child’s education.

Stay-Tuned: Ask your child what he or she is studying, and look at his/her STAR binder every night. The STAR binder is where you will find the newsletters and notes that are sent home, as well as any homework that needs to be completed. I will also send home progress reports or make phone calls if I feel that your child is not progressing as expected. Please also sign up for Remind to get alerts about things going on in our classroom and follow us on Twitter @Webers2ndGrade!

Ask Questions: If you have any concerns or are wondering why something is happening, please feel free to call at work (825-6763) or at home (825-2938) or you can always email me (wendi.weber@pas.k12.mn.us) at any time. I welcome all concerns, ideas, and feedback that affect your child or our classroom. If something is not working, I am more than willing to find a solution that fits everyone involved. I welcome all feedback.

Flexible Seating: After MUCH research and trial and error with last year's second graders my class has been transformed this summer with flexible seating options for all of my students. I find it important to give students some ownership in where they learn and work best. When students have the power to choose they make great choices and amazing things happen. This is called flexible seating because it changes throughout the day. Please ask your child daily where their favorite spot was or where they find they learn best. I am SURE this class will do great things.

Homework: Every week your child will have a spelling homework sheet and they will need to complete a spelling 'assignment' from the yellow packet. Please initial or sign next to the assignment description for credit and/or bring in the completed work on Friday. I will also expect your child to read 15 minutes at least five nights a week. This can be done in a variety of ways including partner reading, reading to them or reading aloud or silently. Along with these two assignments your child will have both a reading and a math fluency sheet to do 5 times a week. The reading is timed and will only take 1 minute-just set a timer and make a mark where you stop! The math sheets will vary but your child will need to use a VisaVis marker and do the sheet in the protector. Set a timer to see how long it takes to complete and record the time. Watch the improvement!! I encourage you to set up with your child a scheduled time for homework each day. Please note all homework is due on Friday unless otherwise noted and your child will receive credits for completed work.

Snack: All students may bring a small healthy snack to have during milk break in the afternoon. You may also send a bottle of water with your child. It works best to have something around the outside to keep it from sweating all over our papers. Please do not send water bottles that have twist-off caps. Please also give me a heads up at least a day ahead of time if your child is planning to bring a treat for his or her birthday.
Classroom Management: I will be managing my classroom through a classroom economy system. Students will receive both debits and credits for following the rules or breaking them. At the end of the week, the student will be issued a ‘pay check’ for the amount of credits they have earned. They are then able to go to the Webskidz Bank to cash in their pay check. Once a month they will be able to spend their ‘money’ at the store. This philosophy teaches many real life lessons and makes students accountable. Students will also each get an Arrow Swag Tag, this is a necklace and students can earn tags by doing their best and being a good citizen. These necklaces will be kept here at school but the students can show their Swag by wearing them on Fridays! There is no limit to the number of tags they can earn!

If you have any questions about anything-contact me at any time!

Sincerely,

Wendi Weber
